When Life Feels Like Walking Through Mud: How a Strengths-Based Approach Can Help You Navigate ADHD

Has ADHD been holding you back from accomplishing all that you want to accomplish? You may think, “I know what I need to do, I just can’t get myself to do it.” You see the goal, but you just can’t seem to get to it. Each task leading to this goal feels like walking through mud.

You look around, and people are walking on cleared paths to get to their goals. Even moving sidewalks! How are they doing that? Why can’t I?

When Tasks Feel Harder Than They Should

To compensate, you work twice – or three times – as hard just to keep up. All of this extra work may have led you to burnout. You’re tired, and you’re not sure how you can keep doing this.

You understand that you have so much potential, but you just can’t seem to reach it. It’s certainly not from a lack of trying, a lack of motivation, or a lack of great ideas (of which you have many).

But all of this walking through mud and not reaching goals has likely led to discouragement, and feelings of shame, guilt, and low self-esteem. And each of those feelings are intense and difficult to manage. They can explode and express themselves in unruly ways, even causing friction in your relationships.

Here’s what I can tell you: You’re not dumb. You’re not lazy. And you’re not a failure.

ADHD Is More Than Just Its Challenges

ADHD is a whole world of contradictions and hypocrisies. You contain multitudes! The very thing that can hold you back is the same thing that can propel you to great heights. You have so many strengths. It just takes putting the brakes on your brain long enough to recognize them.

You might be supremely creative and imaginative. You might be so funny that you bring people to tears. You might be very sociable and make friends in the line at the grocery store. Maybe you’re the spontaneous friend who gets others out of their comfort zone. You might be very good at working with your hands, tinkering with technology for hours. And that topic you’re interested in? You have so much passion and great fortitude for taking the time to understand difficult things.

Building on Your Strengths

The goal isn’t to ignore the challenges of ADHD or pretend they don’t exist. Executive functioning difficulties are real, and they can make everyday tasks feel exhausting. But when you begin to understand how your brain works, you can stop measuring yourself by strategies that were never designed for you. Instead, you can build routines, systems, and habits that complement your strengths rather than constantly fighting against your challenges.

Living well with ADHD isn’t about becoming someone else. It’s about learning to work with your brain instead of against it. That starts with replacing self-criticism with self-understanding and recognizing that success doesn’t have to look the same for everyone.

At Wellness Works Counseling, we also offer a free Living Well with ADHD: Building on Your Strengths Webinar designed specifically for individuals who are struggling to manage their ADHD symptoms. In a supportive, encouraging environment, participants learn how ADHD may be impacting daily life, understand why focusing on strengths is so important, and discover they’re not alone in the challenges they’re experiencing.

Living well with ADHD isn’t about fixing yourself—it’s about understanding how your brain works and building on your strengths. When you learn to work with your ADHD instead of against it, you can reduce self-criticism, build confidence, and create strategies that help you thrive.
