Individual therapy is a tool that some people use to get extra support around a specific area of their life. If you find yourself up at night or anxious about a relationship or responsibility at work, meeting with someone who is trained to support you through that time can open up options that perhaps haven’t been considered before.
People come to therapy for different reasons, and not all therapists work in the same way. Sometimes it takes time to find a person who is the right fit for you.
Take the case of Jesse. Jesse is a college student who was able to hide his anxiety during high school, but now that he is away from home, he notices he doubts himself more, and these thoughts are affecting his social life. He finds himself in situations where he feels uncomfortable, and people around him are beginning to wonder if he is okay.
In Jesse’s case, a therapist can meet with him virtually or in person, so he can begin to understand more about the situations that activate his anxiety. Sometimes anxiety can be helped by applying coping skills and receiving support during a particularly stressful time. There are also ways to identify and work through key memories that may contribute to feelings of anxiety, self-doubt, and discomfort.
