Does this sound familiar? You notice your partner hasn’t responded to your text for several hours. Your anxiety spikes, and your thoughts start to spiral. Is he mad at me? Did I do something wrong? What is he doing right now that he can’t respond to me? What if he’s cheating on me?
To ease your anxiety, you send him multiple texts and leave several missed calls. He doesn’t answer, and that only makes your anxiety worsen. When he finally responds, you explode with anger.
“Why didn’t you answer my text? What’s wrong with you?”
Your partner gets overwhelmed by the fight and doesn’t speak to you for several days.
What happens in these situations leaves you feeling overwhelmed, on edge, and unsure of where your relationship stands. You never feel fully settled or secure in your partnership, and your anxieties are only ever temporarily relieved. You’re often confused and not sure what to do to fix it, although you want to.
If this sounds familiar, you may have found yourself in a tricky dynamic: a relationship between someone with an anxious attachment style and someone with an avoidant attachment style.
Familiar Relationship Patterns
In the beginning, you may have been attracted to your partner because the pattern is familiar. In your formative years, you may have been in a similar situation in which you learned to intensely pursue a caregiver to ensure your needs were met. Later, when you look for a romantic partner and find someone with an avoidant attachment style, it feels familiar.
Your pre-established relationship patterns could be repeated, and there is some sense of safety in that familiarity. At the same time, the relationship itself may feel stressful or painful.
Understanding the Pursue-Withdraw Dynamic
As the relationship progresses, you may notice a cycle appear: the pursue-withdrawal dynamic. As the anxious partner, you crave closeness and fear abandonment. On the other hand, the avoidant partner wants autonomy and fears closeness.
When the anxious partner notices withdrawal, they increase their efforts to maintain closeness. When the avoidant partner sees the increased efforts for closeness, they withdraw. And the cycle continues.
Over time, this dynamic can worsen, and the behaviors and arguments can escalate. Both partners are frequently left without their needs being met, and therefore the relationship doesn’t feel fulfilling to either party.
As the anxious partner, you may feel increasingly rejected, abandoned, or insecure. The avoidant partner may feel increasingly pressured, overwhelmed, or controlled. In order for both partners to feel secure in the relationship, the cycle must be broken.
Breaking the Cycle is Possible
Breaking the pursue-withdraw cycle is possible. Understanding your attachment style can help you recognize why you feel and react the way you do. Instead of automatically pursuing your partner, you can learn to pause and identify what you are feeling and what you need. You can learn to communicate those feelings and needs more directly and compassionately.
